Hantavirus in Finland2008

Puumala virus epidemic continues in Finland through the 2008 transmission season

Overview

The 2007–2008 Puumala virus epidemic in Finland produced one of the highest two-year case totals in Finnish hantavirus surveillance history. The 2008 season continued the elevated activity that began the previous autumn, before the bank-vole population entered the contraction phase of its cycle. THL surveillance and clinical follow-up data from the 2007–2008 epidemic later contributed to landmark Finnish studies on long-term outcomes of nephropathia epidemica, including renal-function recovery and the rare association with hypertension.
