Hantavirus in China — 2026
Hantavirus in China — 2026 live tracking of the world's largest HFRS surveillance system
Overview
Live Chinese hantavirus surveillance for 2026 is tracked daily on Hantapulse. China remains the country with the largest hantavirus burden worldwide — approximately 8,000–15,000 cases per year of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, predominantly Hantaan virus in rural agricultural provinces, plus Seoul virus in urban areas. Annual reported counts are down sharply from the 1980s peak of more than 100,000 cases thanks to vaccination programmes and rodent-control measures. Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Jilin provinces in the northeast historically report the highest incidence. See the live China risk index for current signals.
China baseline
By far the largest hantavirus burden worldwide. Down sharply from 1980s peak of >100,000 cases/year thanks to vaccine programs and rodent control. Northeastern provinces (Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin) and central rural regions dominate.
