Hantavirus in Argentina — 2025
Argentina hantavirus surveillance — ratada-cycle vigilance and Patagonia monitoring
Overview
Argentine Andes virus surveillance through 2025 continued under the framework established after the 2018–2019 Epuyén outbreak: enhanced contact tracing, hospital isolation protocols for confirmed cases, and seasonal warnings tied to long-tailed pygmy rice rat population dynamics. The Patagonian provinces of Chubut, Río Negro, and Neuquén remained the principal focus of surveillance, alongside Salta and Buenos Aires Province where other South American hantavirus strains circulate. National annual case totals continued to track within the multi-year range of roughly 80–150 confirmed HPS cases.
Argentina baseline
